2020 U.S. CENSUS PARTICIPATION
The Rev. Marie Tatro, Vicar for Community Justice Ministry, has been reminding us that an accurate count in the 2020 Census is crucial to nearly all aspects of our civic life.
Census data impacts decisions at the national, state, tribal and local levels including everything from federal funding and congressional representation to local fire departments and bus routes. It is vital to the well-being of all our communities that every person is counted.
To support Mother Tatro’s efforts, Episcopal Ministries of Long Island (EMLI) is working in cooperation with the New York Regional Office of the U.S. Census Bureau.
As trusted members of your communities, faith leaders are valuable allies and resources for the Bureau and its work.
Please consider some of the ways you can support the census:
The Census Bureau needs space for: training and helping individuals complete the census questionnaire.
Invite a speaker from the Census Bureau:
Invite a representative from the Census Bureau to speak to your congregation or a community gathering. Representatives are available to come whenever it is convenient for you, whether that means five minutes during announcements on a Sunday or for a full program in the evening or Saturday morning.
Promote Census Hiring:
The Bureau is urgently seeking thousands of individuals to hire as census workers. Please share this job opportunity widely. There is a competitive pay structure and the online process makes applying quick and easy. (See resources below for details)
Communicate to your Members:
Clergy leaders can make a substantial impact simply by speaking about the importance of being counted during sermons or announcements. Printed marketing materials and social media content is available to make it easy to share the message and encourage participation.
Tools and Resources
The Census Bureau has a very comprehensive website with useful tools and materials that can be customized. Visit: 2020 Census Website.
